EA flood modellingComputerised Hydraulic Modelling – a new check service on the EA methodology. By virtue of using highly qualified consultants – leading experts in their field – we can now offer a completely new service to clients . This is to check EA modelling all over the country which affects the aspirations of developers. Often they can be inhibited from developing in certain areas due to the constraints of EA flood modelling. On a number of occasions we have found that due to the methodology used in the flood modelling assumptions have been made on flows and pathways for flood that do not stand up to more vigorous checking. Also not enough terrestrial levels information has been used to underpin the calculations and assumptions inherent in the modelling exercise. This is down mainly to the fact that now out of date modelling techniques were used at the time the modelling was done. The EA national flood map is actually a very crude form of assessment. It was built up using “sonar overfly” where sonar waves were used from a Lear jet to bounce sound waves off the ground and so build up a picture of the topography of the land .However if, for example, the jet flew over a wood then the tops of the trees were recorded rather than the ground level . In its defence the EA say they used “interpolation” in cases such as this but we maintain it is impossible for the EA to “interpolate” countrywide. They have now had to admit that the flood map is for guidance only and not to be relied upon but they add that they have to work to it because there is nothing better to offer. They have done hydraulic modelling on certain stretches of water-courses but much of this was historically based on ISIS modelling – a one dimensional system which was the best on offer at the time. This has since been overtaken by two and three dimensional modelling which is far more accurate. Using our consultants to check on modelling using more modern technology we have been able to show that flood pathways stated are actually inconsistent with ground conditions and levels and that areas thought to be at risk of flooding under ISIS assessment are in fact out of the flood plain. This has been the case on a number of occasions and we have decided to offer this checking service to protect client’s interests should the need arise. We have now checked EA modelling in London, Gloucestershire, the suburbs of Birmingham and Northumberland. In each case the risk of flooding was over-stated.
